AmCOMP Helps Micro Metals Achieve and Celebrate Two Years of Zero Lost Time Accidents
Micro Metals, a powder metallurgy plant in Jamestown, TN, produces
metal component-level parts for automotive, appliance, hardware, and lawn and garden
manufacturers. With a history of high lost time accidents, the Company had a high experience
mod, and most workers' compensation insurers shied away from the account.
In a meeting with management, AmCOMP's senior loss prevention consultant noted that the CEO,
Scott Edwards, made a conscious decision to embrace safety as a way of life. He stressed that
Micro Metals was committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for its employees by
conducting training in the areas of safety and health and meeting or exceeding all OSHA
standards.
In deciding whether or not to underwrite an employer, AmCOMP considers management's attitude
toward and concern for their employees, including the company’s safety training and procedures, as
well as the industry standard consideration of the prospective policyholder's prior loss history.
AmCOMP decided Micro Metals was
serious about safety and worked diligently with the management team, safety committee and manager
to formalize policies and procedures. To get them "fired-up" about safety, AmCOMP's loss prevention
personnel conducted a training seminar on job safety analysis, going out on the manufacturing floor
to start the process on the equipment. He also helped identify safety exposures, shared other
training resources, reviewed their written safety programs and made quarterly visits to the floor
as a visible presence and safety reminder. Micro Metals also made a capital investment in the
safety program, awarding every employee – all 100 of them – with a quarterly cash incentive for
each quarter without a workplace accident.
In accepting a plaque from AmCOMP in recognition of two years of zero lost time accidents,
Mr. Edwards, said: "When people are confident in their safety, their morale is buoyed,
attendance and attitude improve, and pride in providing the customer with quality products and
services takes precedence! Toward that end, Micro Metals works to uphold its safety policy."
To which Frank Pinson, President of the Southern Region of AmCOMP, replied; "To go two years
without having an accident is relatively unheard of in the workers' compensation industry. We
are honored to be your partner in this endeavor that sends everybody back home after work."
